Steps of Certification

The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) certifies emergency physicians who meet its educational, professional, and examination standards. Certification by ABEM demonstrates expertise in Emergency Medicine.

There are three steps for physicians to achieve certification in Emergency Medicine after completing residency training:

1. Apply for Certification
2. Pass the Qualifying Exam
3. Pass the Oral Exam

Who is ABEM?

Founded in 1976, The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) develops and administers the Emergency Medicine certification examination for physicians who have met the ABEM credentialing requirements. ABEM strives to ensure that its certification processes are fair, valid, and reliable. ABEM is not a membership organization, but a non-profit, independent evaluation organization. ABEM is one of 24 Member Boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties. The ABEM mission is to ensure the highest standards in the specialty of Emergency Medicine.
