Welcome
Welcome to the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) public website. ABEM certifies qualifying physicians who specialize in Emergency Medicine and is a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). ABMS certification is sought and earned by physicians on a voluntary basis. ABEM and other ABMS member boards certify only those physicians who meet high educational, professional standing, and examination standards. ABEM and other ABMS member boards are not membership associations.
ABEM extends a special welcome to its diplomates who will participate in Emergency Medicine Continuous Certification (EMCC), an ABMS Maintenance of Certification (MOC)® program. EMCC represents an important shift from periodic evaluation and certification of Emergency Medicine specialists to diplomates' continuous certification activity.

ABIM and ABEM Reach Agreement on ABEM Co-Sponsorship of IM CCM
We are pleased to announce that we have achieved an agreement with the American Board of Internal Medicine to become a co-sponsor in IM Critical Care Medicine. This means that our residents will have access to training in two-year critical care Internal Medicine sponsored fellowship programs upon completion of their Emergency Medicine residencies. Following successful completion of the fellowship, they will be able to become certified in Internal Medicine Critical Care Medicine.
At this time, the only route to Critical Care Medicine certification for Emergency Medicine physicians is through Internal Medicine based fellowships. Both the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Surgery have indicated that they are not interested in pursuing a similar agreement. We continue to hope that in the future this may change and will continue to work with both boards as opportunities arise.
There has been no established date for when the first examination will be given. A recent article in the ACEP News (June 10, 2010) stating that the first certification examination is expected in 2012 was incorrect. Despite the collaboration between ABEM and ABIM, there remain several steps that are required prior to establishing a date for the first examination. ABEM will post the anticipated date for the first examination when it becomes available.
Many ABEM diplomates have asked questions regarding ABEM's co-sponsorship of CCM. The attached FAQ's are written to respond to some of the questions posed by diplomates.

APP Patient Care Practice Improvement Requirements
One of the most frequently asked questions about the practice improvement requirement of APP relates to what exactly a diplomate must do to meet the requirement. The spring issue of the ABEM Memo newsletter contains information on this requirement. Follow this link to read the full article on pages 4 and 5 of the newsletter. After reading this article, if you have additional questions, contact ABEM at 517.332.4800 extension 183.

Change in the Appropriate Use of LLSA Tests
At its February 2008 meeting, the ABEM Board of Directors adopted policy changes that affect Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) course providers, including Medical Toxicology diplomates who are ACCME-approved course providers. All course providers should contact ABEM for information on a limited licensing agreement that will allow ACCME course providers to project the LLSA tests for the purpose of educational discussion.
The intent of the LLSA tests is to stimulate diplomate learning and to provide a self-assessment tool for diplomates to use in gauging their own understanding of the content of each LLSA reading. The licensing agreement is designed to facilitate such learning and discussion while still protecting ABEM copyright.
Outside of ACCME-approved courses, ABEM diplomates continue to be able to individually access LLSA tests via the ABEM website and engage in collegial LLSA test discussion sessions with fellow diplomates.
If you have any questions about these changes, please contact Timothy J. Dalton, Examination and Evaluation Project Specialist, at the ABEM office.
