ABEM is here to work with you to provide the tools and information needed to assist residents in getting started on a path to achieve ABEM certification.

Residency Training and Verification

Physicians seeking Emergency Medicine certification through ABEM are required to complete an accredited residency training.

At the end of their residency, residency training programs will need to verify the completion of their training on the ABEM portal. Verification is required for physicians to be board eligible.

ABEM Portal

EM Training Programs

ABEM certification requires the successful completion of a 3- or 4-year program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

A current list of ACGME-accredited EM training programs is available on their website.

In-Training Exam

The ITE targets the expected knowledge and experience of an EM3 resident. A resident's ITE score can be used as a reference for the probability that they pass the Qualifying Exam.

ABEM Certification Process

There are three steps for physicians to achieve certification in Emergency Medicine after completing residency training: Apply, Pass the Qualifying Exam, and Pass the Oral Certification Exam.
