Physicians whose Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine subspecialty certification applications are accepted as fulfilling the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Eligibility Criteria for Certification in Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine are offered an assignment to the examination.
ABEM mails an examination registration form to all physicians whose applications are accepted as fulfilling the eligibility criteria. Physicians must formally accept the examination assignment by returning the examination registration form. Deadline dates for submitting the registration form to ABEM are included in the registration materials.
The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine subspecialty certification examination is a three-hour examination and is a computer based examination. The American Board of Preventive Medicine administers it annually. Important Dates and Information
The American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) is the administrative board for the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine subspecialty certification examination. Candidates should contact ABPM if they have questions related to scoring the examination or questions about their specific scores.
Physicians who take the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine subspecialty examination will be notified in writing of examination results within 90 days of the last day of the examination administration. ABEM will post on its website, www.abem.org, under “News, Notices“, “Exam Dates & Fees“ the date on which results are mailed.
To ensure that they receive their results, physicians must maintain up-to-date address information using EMCC Online.
To ensure the confidentiality of examination results, all information will be sent to candidates in written form. Results will not be provided via telephone, fax or email.
If an ABEM candidate fails the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine subspecialty certification examination, the Policy on Maintaining Open and Active Subspecialty Certification Applications outlines the process available to retake the examination.
ABEM orders certificates for its candidates who pass the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine subspecialty examination. Certification in Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine is for a period of ten years. The certificates are dated from the date of the examination results letter and expire December 31 ten years hence. The primary certification must be valid in order for the subspecialty certification to remain valid.
The names of those certified are sent to the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) for publication in the Official ABMS Directory of Board Certified Medical Specialists.
