Becoming an ABEM Director, Examiner, or Item Writer

Becoming a Director

ABEM is not a membership organization. ABEM sponsors provide slates of nominees for director positions, and new directors are elected by the current Board of Directors. Directors serve four-year terms and are eligible to serve up to two consecutive terms. The directors participate on ABEM committees and task forces convened to continually review and maintain our high standards of excellence. Directors who are ABEM-certified may serve as examiners involved with either the qualifying or oral exams. Directors also serve by representing ABEM to other organizations.

Becoming an Examiner

Select ABEM diplomates are appointed as examiners for ABEM's oral examinations.  Examiners are recommended by their peers and appointed by the Board of Directors.  They are individuals who are actively involved in the clinical practice of Emergency Medicine and are distinguished for their high quality patient care, teaching, research, or leadership.

The number of new examiners appointed each year will be determined annually based on the needs of the oral examination.

Becoming an Item Writer

Select ABEM diplomates are appointed as item writers for ABEM's multiple choice examinations.  Item writers are recommended by their peers and appointed by the Board of Directors.  They are individuals who are actively involved in the clinical practice of Emergency Medicine and are distinguished for their high quality patient care, teaching, research, or leadership.

A diplomate who is interested in being considered for an item writer position should submit a current curriculum vitae and a letter briefly describing his or her current clinical practice.  In addition, a current ABEM director, senior director, or item writer must submit a letter of nomination for the diplomate.  Nomination letters submitted by item writers will be forwarded to current and senior directors.  Nominees endorsed by a current or senior director will be forwarded to the Board of Directors for consideration.
