A physician who is nominated to be an oral examiner and has never served as an ABEM oral examiner must meet the following four criteria:

  • Have been an ABEM diplomate for the previous five years. This period will be calculated from the date of the oral examination in which the individual achieved certification to the date of the appointment decision.
  • Have successfully completed an ACGME- or RCPSC-approved Emergency Medicine residency; and
  • Be actively involved in the practice of clinical Emergency Medicine.
A physician who is nominated to be an oral examiner and had previously served as an ABEM oral examiner but is not currently an examiner, must meet the following three criteria:

Examiner Nomination Procedure

A diplomate who is interested in being considered for an examiner position should submit a current curriculum vitae and a letter briefly describing his or her current clinical practice. In addition, a current ABEM examiner, director, or senior director must submit a letter of nomination for the diplomate. Nomination letters submitted by examiners will be forwarded to current and senior directors. Nominees endorsed by a current or senior director will be forwarded to the Test Administration Committee for consideration.

The number of new examiners appointed each year will be determined annually based on the needs of the oral examination.

Nominations that meet the criteria stated above will be submitted to the Test Administration Committee at the summer Board of Directors meeting, which is normally held during the month of July. The Committee makes recommendations to the Board of Directors as new examiners are needed. Newly appointed examiners will be notified in writing following the Board meeting.
