Rita Kay Cydulka, M.D., M.S., FACEP, of Shaker Heights, Ohio, has assumed the presidency of the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM). Dr. Cydulka has been a member of the ABEM Board of Directors since 2002 and serves as chair of the Test Development Committee and the Research Committee. She is an editor of the lifelong learning and self assessment (LLSA) examination and has served as a Chief Examiner for the oral certification examination since 2003. Dr. Cydulka is also an ABEM representative to the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).
Dr. Cydulka serves on the Editorial Board of Annals of Emergency Medicine, the official journal of the American College of Emergency Physicians, as an editor of Tintinalli’s Emergency Medicine, and on the steering committee of the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. She is an active contributor to the scientific literature, with over 100 publications in peer review journals and textbooks. |
Dr. Cydulka received her medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, Illinois. She completed a combined Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine Residency at Northwestern University. She previously served as the residency director at the Case Western Reserve University/MetroHealth Medical Center program in Emergency Medicine and currently serves as Vice-Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at MetroHealth Medical at Case Western Reserve University.
The American Board of Emergency Medicine establishes the credentialing requirements and examinations to evaluate physicians who seek certification in Emergency Medicine. The first certification examination was administered in 1980. As of December 31, 2006, ABEM has certified 23,320 physicians.
