2010-11 President is Mark T. Steele, M.D.

 

   Mark T. Steele, M.D., of Olathe, Kansas, has assumed the office of President of the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM).  Dr. Steele has been a member of the Board of Directors since July 2003 and he was elected to the Executive Finance Committee in 2007.  He has served ABEM in many capacities since 1988, including serving as an oral examiner, item writer, and senior oral board reviewer.  He chairs the Test Administration Committee and has chaired the Board’s Nominating Committee. Dr. Steele also represents ABEM as a representative to the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).

 

Dr. Steele received his medical degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1980, and completed his Emergency Medicine residency in 1983 at Truman Medical Center.  His interests have been in the areas of wound care and infectious disease, circadian rhythms and shift work, and emergency medicine practice issues.  He has authored or contributed to over 50 peer reviewed manuscripts and book chapters.  Dr. Steele is a professor of Emergency Medicine, at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine.  He serves as Chief Medical Officer for Truman Medical Centers (TMC), UMKC Associate Dean for TMC Programs, and as Executive Medical Director for University Physician Associates.


















The American Board of Emergency Medicine establishes the credentialing requirements and examinations to evaluate physicians who seek certification in Emergency Medicine.  The first examination was administered in 1980.  As of December 2009, 26,394 physicians are certified by ABEM.
