Since the ACGME has not yet begun accrediting EMS fellowship programs, it is expected that the majority of EMS applicants for the 2013 examination will apply through the practice pathway. To allow time to verify practice and training and to allow the Credentials Committee to review a potentially significant number of applications, the first certification application period for EMS is slated to begin October 1, 2012, and end June 30, 2013.
Certification applications will be available on the ABEM website. ABEM is currently developing the application review process, and will submit any issues that arise (e.g., interpretations of the eligibility criteria) to the Committee at its summer 2012 meeting.
ABEM will process applications as they are received and submit them to the Credentials Committee for review at its winter and summer 2013 meetings. Additional meetings will be scheduled if needed. As the Committee reviews applications, it may wish to identify criteria to allow ABEM staff to review and approve some applications, as has been done for other subspecialties with a practice pathway.
