EMCC Assessment of Practice Performance Overview

OVERVIEW

Assessment of Practice Performance (APP) remains a solid requirement of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Maintenance of Certification program. One of the ABMS’ primary goals for this component is to support diplomates’ continued growth of specialty-based skills. Component four of EMCC focuses on diplomate involvement in a practice improvement program.

Because APP is designed for diplomates involved in patient care activities, clinically inactive diplomates will not be required to participate in APP.

Like all aspects of training, certification, and EMCC, APP will be based on The Model of the Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine or the core contents of the EM sponsored subspecialties, depending on the diplomate's practice.

Diplomates' involvement in national, regional, or local practice improvement (PI) programs forms the core of ABEM's APP requirements.  Most diplomates are already engaged in these types of programs.

To get started meeting your APP requirements, follow these basic steps:

  1. Identify a patient care PI activity that meets ABEM requirements.
  2. Participate in the patient care PI activities you identified for your own EM practice.
  3. Identify a source of feedback that includes feedback from your patients in the area of communication/professionalism.
  4. Beginning in 2011, use EMCC Online by the end of the fourth and eighth years of your 10-year EMCC cycle to attest that you are participating in appropriate APP activities.  Include the contact information for someone who will verify your participation.
