| Longitudinal Study of Emergency Physicians Overview | |
Since 1994, a group of emergency physicians has participated in the Longitudinal Study of Emergency Physicians (LSEP), which was designed to answer a series of questions about the practice of Emergency Medicine. The study consists of a comprehensive survey administered every five years, e.g., 1994, 1999, and 2004, and shorter surveys administered yearly. With the addition of a cohort of new residency-trained physicians in 1999 and again in 2004, there are currently nearly 1,400 emergency physicians participating in the study. Additional panels are added every five years.
The LSEP seeks to describe the realities of practice in the specialty of Emergency Medicine, the relationship of the specialty to the personal lives and well-being of emergency physicians, profiles of the population of emergency physicians, and changes that appear in these factors over time.
The LSEP collects information related to the following five areas:
- Professional Interests, Attitudes, and Goals
- Training, Certification, and Licensing
- Professional Experience
- Well-being and Leisure Activities
- Demographic Information
Links to each of the surveys, as well as links to reports on the surveys are provided below. The 2011 LSEP surveys can be accessed only by LSEP participants. (EM Residents participating in the longitudinal study can access the residents survey from the LSEMR Overview page.)
To access the survey, you will need to enter the ID and password that were sent to you with the paper survey. If you are not sure the survey you received is appropriate for your current situation, we recommend you complete the online survey. You will be automatically directed to the appropriate survey based on your responses to the initial questions. Please submit your survey only once, choosing either the paper or the online version. If you have questions, please contact ABEM at research@abem.org.
Selected results from previous years’ surveys are available to everyone under Links to Reports on Physician Surveys, below
