ABEM’s Philosophy on Combined Training Programs

Proposals for new combined training programs should support an established career path that a significant number of individuals have already pursued, rather than seek to establish a new career path to attract individuals. ABEM has established a process for reviewing suggested new combined training opportunities.

Applications for new combined training programs are reviewed and approved by the participating Boards. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education does not have a process in place to review and accredit most combined training programs; thus, this accreditation is the responsibility of the specialty Board.
