  • Sports Medicine Certification Examination

Sports Medicine is a clinical subspecialty concerned with physical fitness, and the diagnosis and treatment of injuries sustained in sports activities. ABEM-, American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine (AOBEM)–, and American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM)–certified physicians attain subspecialty certification in Sports Medicine by meeting the eligibility criteria, fulfilling specific credential requirements, and passing the Sports Medicine Certification Examination.

ABEM, with three other American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Member Boards, offer subspecialty certification in Sports Medicine, administered by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). Each Member Board is responsible for credentialing its own candidates and notifying them of results. ABEM offers physicians certified by ABIM the opportunity to become certified in Sports Medicine

Emergency physicians seeking initial certification in Sports Medicine must:

Exam Process

The Sports Medicine Certification Examination is offered twice each year, in the summer and fall.

Apply

To apply, ABEM-, AOBEM-, and ABIM-certified physicians complete and submit the current year’s application, available from ABEM. Complete applications include:

  • Signed, and notarized current-year certification application form
  • Application fee in U.S. funds

The application fee covers the cost of processing the application only and cannot be refunded.

A final application review will be completed when all information is received. Incomplete applications will be closed in February of the following year. Physicians with closed applications must submit new applications if they wish to apply. They must meet all requirements in place at the time the new application is submitted.

ABEM notifies physicians regarding whether their application has been approved.

Register

Physicians with approved applications will receive information about how to register for the exam and schedule a seat at a Prometric test center.

Results

ABEM sends candidates the results of their examination in writing. Results are also posted on candidates' ABEM Personal Page.
