Call for Nominations
The American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PedsEM) Subboard is seeking one ABEM-certified physician member to fill an upcoming vacancy on the Subboard. ABEM encourages nominations from emergency physicians who have achieved subspecialty certification in PedsEM, including those in community practice and other settings. The physician filling this position will begin their six-year term January 1, 2025. The nominations period will close April 11, 2024.
The principal function of Subboard appointees is to work with the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) test development staff to develop comprehensive, fair, reliable, and valid assessments over a period of six years or three exam cycles. This appointment will start January 1, 2025, and end December 31, 2030. Please note a virtual orientation will take place in June 2024. In addition, the selected individual will be paired with a mentor to start learning how to write items.
Nominee Criteria
- Be certified in EM for a minimum of five years before the initial term begins
- Be a graduate of an ACGME-accredited fellowship in PedsEM
- Be certified in PedsEM
- Be actively involved in the clinical practice of PedsEM
- Participate fully in continuing certification
- If the physician has maintained EM certification, the following criteria must be met:
- Be certified in EM
- Be actively involved in the clinical practice of EM
- Actively participate in the ABEM EM continuing certification process at the same level as required of all ABEM diplomates
PedEM Subboard Member Roles and Responsibilities
Responsibilities
- Write questions for the examinations based on specific item writing assignments, which are usually completed within two to three months
- Submit HIPAA-compliant graphics and videos for use on examinations
- Participate in conference calls and webinars to review items, conduct key validation, establish the passing standard, conduct form review, and other functions as needed
- Review and revise questions as a subject matter expert prior to the in-person meeting
- Attend the annual in-person meeting of the Subboard in Chapel Hill, NC
- Participate in the evaluation and feedback system for all Subboard members
Requirements and Terms of Service
- Appointees must maintain certification in the appropriate subspecialty through the term of service (Subboard members are not required to maintain their general Pediatrics certification)
- Appointees must be able to serve six-year, non-renewable terms
- Appointees must be able to participate in a remote orientation process taking place approximately six months prior to the first year of the term.
- Appointees will receive reimbursement for travel expenses as well as honoraria for each meeting day
- Appointees must comply with the ABP’s Conflict of Interest policy and the ABP’s Volunteer Code of Conduct.
- Per the Confidentiality Policy, appointees must keep all information confidential specifically determined to be sensitive or proprietary, or generally considered to be matters of confidence
Time Commitment
Overall time commitment inclusive of meetings and travel: 2-10 hours per month plus a three-day meeting in December, alternating virtually and in-person each year.
