Single Accreditation System (SAS)

Introduction to ABEM Under the SAS System

The following information will help residents in EM training programs that become ACGME-accredited under the Single Accreditation System (SAS).

Required Training

Program directors must ensure that all ACGME and ABEM training requirements are met for the resident to be eligible for ABEM certification.

Four-year Programs

Residents must complete all training for their accredited program.

Residents must complete at least 46 weeks of training in each residency level. Vacation time, sick time, leaves of absence, etc., cannot exceed six weeks in an academic year. Leave time cannot be accrued from year to year.

Programs Transitioning from 4-year to 3-year

Residents must complete at least four years in the same program, or a combination of AOA-approved and ACGME-accredited training. Alternately, a resident must complete at least 24 months under the new three-year format after completing the academic year in which they are enrolled.

Residents who are part of a transitioning program must follow requirements based on their year of training

  • First Year: Complete training based on the new three-year format, while also completing at least 24 extra months of training (3 years total).
  • Second Year: Complete training based on the new three-year format, while also completing at least 24 extra months of training (4 years total).
  • Third Year: Complete training based on the new three-year format, while also completing at least 12 extra months of training in the same program (4 years total).
  • Fourth Year: Complete the current level of training (4 years total).
