Call for Applications

The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) Emergency Medical Services Subboard is seeking one physician member certified in Emergency Medical Services to fill an upcoming vacancy on the Subboard. The physician selected for this appointment will begin her or his term on December 1, 2024. Terms run four years in length with the possibility of reappointment to a final four-year term. The application period will close on October 3, 2024.

Nominee Criteria

  • Be ABEM certified in Emergency Medicine Services (EMS) for a minimum of five years before the initial term begins;
  • Be actively involved in the clinical practice of EMS;
  • Participate fully in the EMS continuing certification process; and
  • If the diplomate wishes to maintain EM certification, the following criteria must be met:
    • Be certified in EM
    • Be actively involved in the clinical practice of EM
    • Actively participate in the ABEM program of continuing certification at the same level as required of all ABEM diplomates 

Emergency Medical Services Subboard Member Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Actively participate in a business meeting, one in-person Item Writing meeting, and other virtual meetings as needed
  2. Item writer for the certification exam
  3. Item writer for MyEMSCert modules
  4. Review and edit items for all assessments
  5. Determine articles to be used for MyEMSCert
  6. Update and create the core content of EMS that is used as the basis of all assessments
  7. Update the assessment blueprints
  8. Oversee Standard Setting for all assessments
  9. Actively participate in Subboard committees as assigned (e.g., exam editor, MyEMSCert editor, credentialing, etc.)

Time Commitment

Overall time commitment inclusive of meetings and travel: 85 – 95 hours annually
