ABEM Successfully Pivots to Virtual Format for Oral Certification Exam

Dec 18, 2020

After postponing the in-person 2020 Oral Certification Exams due to COVID-19, the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) focused its efforts to help emergency physicians achieve ABEM certification.

December 16-18, ABEM successfully administered a virtual oral exam to nearly 200 emergency physicians. The shift from in-person to virtual allowed the exam to be administered during the COVID pandemic giving recently graduated emergency physicians the opportunity to become ABEM certified.

“We are proud of the exam and everyone involved” shared ABEM president, Mary Nan Mallory, M.D., M.B.A.  “We understand how stressful this time has been for emergency physicians and we’re grateful for their patience as we’ve retooled the oral certification exam to meet their needs.”

Testing dates for three virtual Oral Exam administrations in early 2021 have been identified and ABEM looks forward to offering this opportunity to more oral exam candidates.
