The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) is pleased to share the publication of the 2025-2026 ABEM Report on Residency and Fellowship Training Information in the Annals of Emergency Medicine and share this important resource with the Emergency Medicine community. The report provides an annual national snapshot of Emergency Medicine residency and fellowship training, helping educators, specialty leaders, and policymakers better understand the current landscape and emerging direction of the specialty.
This year’s report highlights 298 ACGME-accredited categorical Emergency Medicine residency programs, 9,940 active full-time residents, 2,993 graduates in 2025, and 175 ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine-related fellowship programs. Together, these data provide meaningful insight into the physician training pipeline, graduate output, resident characteristics, examination performance, and the continued growth of fellowship and focused practice opportunities.
Key findings include continued but slowing growth in residency programs, increased graduate output, fewer transfers out of the specialty than in past years, continued growth in osteopathic-trained residents, and expanding subspecialty training pathways.
ABEM supports informed decision-making and ongoing dialogue about the future of Emergency Medicine training and certification through collecting and sharing these longitudinal data.
