Become a Director
The American Board of Emergency Medicine is seeking two physician Directors for its Board of Directors. ABEM encourages applications from across the Emergency Medicine community. The application window will close on September 25, 2026.

The ABEM Board of Directors (BOD) is a working Board. Directors should anticipate dedicating 50 or more days annually to Board activities, including travel, committee work, item writing, serving as an examiner, and participation in two in-person Board and committee meetings as well as virtual meetings. Criteria
- Be a graduate of an ACGME-accredited EM residency program.
- Be ABEM certified for ten or more years.
- Required experience as an ABEM volunteer, including experience as an item writer, Certifying Examination examiner, Certifying Exam Case Developer, or appointed representative (e.g., individuals who are currently serving or have served as a subspecialty member, advisory or standing group or committee member, or any other group directly related to ABEM’s mission and vision).
- Show active involvement in organized EM. Ideally, this would include experience as an ABEM question (item) writer, Certifying Examination examiner, or appointed representative.
- Be involved in the clinical practice of EM.

- A passion for the Board’s mission and vision, including dedication to fostering inclusive excellence and advancing health equity.
- A strong belief in the value of the specialty and continuing learning.
- An interest in the assessment process.
- Experience working with outside organizations.
- The ability to talk about core issues and ideas.
Required Materials
An application and a letter of recommendation from a professional colleague who can speak to your qualifications and traits for serving as an ABEM Director are required.
The ABEM Governance Committee will review all applications and prepare a slate of candidates for consideration by the BOD at its February 2027 meeting. The newly elected Directors will be invited to attend the July 2027 Board of Directors meeting as observers and will be seated at the close of that meeting for a four-year term. Directors may serve up to two four-year terms.
