Sports Medicine Item Writer
Call for Application
The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) is seeking two ABEM-certified physicians to join its team of Sports Medicine Item Writers. ABEM encourages nominations from emergency physicians who have achieved subspecialty certification in Sports Medicine, including those in community practice and other settings. The physicians filling this position will begin their four-year term in January 2026. The application period will close January 7, 2026.
The principal function of this position is to create content for both the traditional exam and the upcoming longitudinal assessment.

Applicant Criteria
- Must hold a subspecialty certificate in Sports Medicine and be in good standing.
- Must have completed an ACGME-accredited fellowship in Sports Medicine.
- Must be clinically active in primary specialty or subspecialty and at least three years out of residency.
- Must be actively involved in the clinical practice of Sports Medicine.
- Must fully participate in continuing certification requirements for all relevant specialties.
- Preferred (not required): A score of 500 or better on the most recent recertification exam in Sports Medicine.
Requirements and Terms of Service
- Appointees must be able to serve a three-year term and may serve up to three consecutive three-year terms.
- Appointees must maintain certification in the appropriate subspecialty throughout the term of service
- Appointees will receive reimbursement for travel expenses and for item writer resources (up to $600 annually).
Time Commitment
Appointees will be asked to attend one in-person meeting and complete a writing assignment of no less than 10 items. A short writing training session will be held during the meeting, and a designated time will be provided for participants to work on writing their items.
The 2026 in-person meeting will take place at Hotel Ivy in Minneapolis on June 1–2, 2026. The meeting starts with breakfast on Monday, June 1; therefore, participants should plan to arrive on Sunday, May 31. There will be a full-day meeting on June 1, which will include a group dinner. The meeting will end no later than 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2.
