Opportunity for Designation in Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography Now Available to Physicians Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine

The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) is pleased to share that the focused practice designation (FPD) in Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography (AEMUS) is now available to American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM)-certified physicians.

The American Board of Medical Specialties approved the request by ABIM as a Qualifying Board for the AEMUS FPD. As such, ABIM-certified physicians may be eligible to achieve a FPD in Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography, provided that all initial eligibility requirements are met.

This approval is a significant step forward in broadening access to this designation for ABIM-certified physicians and advancing the field of AEMUS across specialties. Since the inception of the AEMUS FPD, there has been considerable interest from non–ABEM-certified physicians, particularly ABIM-certified hospitalists and physicians specializing in Internal Medicine-Critical Care Medicine.

“ABEM is excited to offer this opportunity to our Internal Medicine colleagues, and we look forward to providing this vital designation to those who meet the standards,” shared ABEM President Diane L. Gorgas, MD.

The next AEMUS FPD examination will be offered from March 30 to April 4, 2026, at Pearson VUE Testing Centers. Applications are open now through December 19, 2025. ABIM-certified physicians who are eligible and meet all of ABEM’s requirements will need to request an application from ABEM. Upon successfully receiving the designation, their AEMUS FPD will be managed through ABEM, including continuing certification requirements.

Physicians who are ABIM-certified and interested in learning more about eligibility and the application process for the FPD in AEMUS should visit the ABEM website and contact subspecialty@abem.org for questions.
