Become a Stimulus Collection and Review Panel Member

The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) is seeking applicants to serve on the Stimulus Collection and Review (SCR) Panel.
The SCR Panel plays an important role in supporting the development and maintenance of ABEM examinations by overseeing the acquisition, review, and management of examination stimuli. The Panel helps ensure that examination content is supported by high-quality visual and other stimulus materials that reflect contemporary Emergency Medicine practice. The application period will close on November 16.
Applicant Criteria
- Be an ABEM-certified physician in good standing with continuing certification requirements.
- Be actively involved in the practice of Emergency Medicine or an ABEM-recognized Emergency Medicine subspecialty.
- Be actively involved in the practice of clinical Emergency Medicine as defined by ABEM’s Policy on Clinical Activity and Meaningful Care .
- Comply with ABEM’s Conflict of Interest requirements .
Roles and Responsibilities
- Reviewing stimuli within the ABEM stimulus bank to ensure quality and continued suitability for assessment purposes.
- Establishing and maintaining networks and sources for obtaining examination stimuli.
- Procuring and contributing new stimuli as assigned.
- Providing guidance to item writers and case developers regarding the acquisition and use of stimuli.
- Recommending and implementing processes related to patient consent, privacy, and ethical use of examination materials.
- Advising ABEM on issues related to the use, management, and quality of examination stimuli.
Desired Attributes
- Ability to draw upon a significant store of medical knowledge as they oversee collection, production, and maintenance of a wide variety of stimuli for use on ABEM examinations.
- Ability to draw on a variety of resources to develop a network of individuals, organizations, institutions, etc., from which to obtain stimuli.
- Willingness and ability to obtain, maintain, and oversee the production of high-quality stimuli, including, but not limited to audio and video clips, dynamic rhythm strips, ultrasound, heart tones, breath sounds, and avatars as directed by the ABEM Stimulus Editor.
- Willingness to perform these tasks within the specified timeframe.
- Willingness and ability to develop and maintain a process for obtaining patient consent and permission to use stimuli that is consistent with ABEM’s principles.
- Participation in conference calls, webinars, and meetings as needed.
Time Commitment
Members serve a three-year term and may be eligible for reappointment for an additional term.
Panel members should anticipate:
- Participation in periodic virtual meetings.
- Independent review of assigned materials.
- Identification, acquisition, and submission of examination stimuli throughout the year.
- Collaboration with staff and examination volunteers as needed.
Actual time commitment will vary based on assignments and panel activities.
