Sports Medicine Assessment Committee Member

Call for Application

The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) is seeking one ABEM-certified physician to fill a vacancy on the Assessment Committee. ABEM encourages nominations from emergency physicians who have achieved subspecialty certification in Sports Medicine, including those in community practice and other settings. The physicians filling this position will begin their three-year term in September 2026. The application period will close on July 3, 2026.

The Assessment Committee is responsible for writing and editing the content for the Sports Medicine Certification Examinations using a psychometrically sound process.

Applicant Criteria

  • Must hold a subspecialty certificate in Sports Medicine and be in good standing.
  • Must have completed an ACGME-accredited fellowship in Sports Medicine.
  • Must be clinically active in primary specialty or subspecialty and at least three years out of residency.
  • Must be actively involved in the clinical practice of Sports Medicine.
  • Must fully participate in continuing certification requirements for all relevant specialties.
  • Preferred (not required): A score of 500 or better on the most recent recertification exam in Sports Medicine.

 

Requirements and Terms of Service

  • The appointee must be able to serve a three-year term and may serve up to three consecutive three-year terms.
  • The appointees must maintain certification in the appropriate subspecialty throughout the term of service.
  • The appointee will receive reimbursement for travel expenses

 

Time Commitment

This committee meets in person two times a year for two days to review a draft of questions that may appear on the Sports certification examination. This year’s committee will meet November 16–18, 2026, and January 10–11, 2027. Note that prior to each meeting, you will need to complete a pre-meeting review of the exam draft, which typically contains around 300 items.
