Volunteer with ABEM: A Meaningful Opportunity to Give Back

ABEM-certified physicians are invited to apply for current volunteer opportunities and help shape the future of Emergency Medicine certification. Applications are open July 15 through September 15, 2026, for three important roles: Certifying Exam Examiner, Case Developer, and Item Writer.

ABEM volunteers are at the heart of our work. They write and refine exam questions, develop cases, support exam administrations, and help ensure ABEM assessments remain fair, valid, reliable, and connected to the realities of clinical practice.

The current opportunities offer multiple ways to contribute.

  • Certifying Exam Examiners support the final step in the certification process by helping assess candidates’ readiness for independent practice.
  • Case Developers help build realistic clinical scenarios for the Certifying Exam.
  • Item Writers use their knowledge and experience to create high-quality exam questions for ABEM assessments.

Volunteering with ABEM is more than a service opportunity. It’s a chance to collaborate with peers, strengthen the specialty, support the next generation of emergency physicians, and engage in meaningful professional development.

Emergency physicians bring practical insight, sound judgment, and a deep commitment to patient care to every ABEM volunteer role. If you are passionate about advancing the specialty and want to be part of work that matters, now is the time to apply.
