Certification in Health Care Administration, Leadership, and Management will provide physicians the opportunity to enhance their practice and set standards in physician leadership. The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) has approved the subspecialty of Health Care Administration, Leadership, and Management for all specialties. This new subspecialty certification is geared toward institutional leaders, including emergency physicians who work in community hospitals. Physicians with experience in health systems leadership will be encouraged to apply.
The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) will serve as the administrative board; the American Boards of Anesthesiology, Family Medicine, and Preventive Medicine are co-sponsoring boards.
The American Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has developed fellowship requirements for HALM, stating that training develops “. . . skills of physician executives who manage patient care operations across medical specialties and health care professions.”
ABEM- and other ABMS-certified physicians can achieve certification in HALM by meeting the eligibility criteria, fulfilling specific credential requirements, and passing the HALM Certification Examination. The first certification exam will be offered in October 2024.
ABEM-certified physicians now have access to 15 subspecialty certification opportunities.
