Haley Academy Application Period Open

Nov 21, 2023

Applications are now open for the 2024 class of the Dr. Leon L. Haley, Jr., Bridge to the Future of Emergency Medicine Academy. The 2024 Academy will take place June 3-14, 2024.

This award-winning program is specifically designed to provide Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) rising second-year medical students the opportunity to participate in an in-person, all-expenses-paid, two-week mentorship program at the ABEM headquarters in East Lansing, Michigan. Students participate in didactics focusing on topics such as reducing health inequities, increasing diversity in physicians, and applying to residency programs. Participants also travel to two nearby Emergency Medicine residency programs (Central Michigan University and Henry Ford Health) for hands-on simulation and educational experiences. The experience is capped off by students completing and presenting a short portfolio project at the end of the Academy.

If interested, an application with personal statement, current resume or CV, and a Dean’s letter of support are required. A brief virtual interview is required prior to the selection of the final 8-12 participating students. The deadline to submit applications is February 20, 2024.

The program does a really good job at showing you that you can do it, that you’re important, and that your community needs you.
~ Diana Polanco, Medical College of Wisconsin, 2023 Haley Academy graduate

If you did have expectations, the Haley Academy definitely will surpass all those expectations and it will definitely draw you into Emergency Medicine.
~ Shiloh Dawson, Boston University Chobanian and Advesian School of Medicine, 2023 Haley Academy Graduate
