Become a Sports Medicine Advisory Committee Member

Call for Nominations

Nomination Application 

The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) Sports Medicine Advisory Committee is seeking one ABEM-certified physician member to fill an upcoming vacancy on the Advisory Committee. ABEM encourages nominations from emergency physicians who have achieved subspecialty certification in Sports Medicine, including those in community practice and other settings. The physician filling this position will begin their four-year term on January 1, 2025. The nomination period will close on May 15, 2024. 

The principal function of the Advisory Committee is to serve as the policy/oversight committee for the Sports Medicine Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ). This appointment will start January 1, 2025, and end December 31, 2029.

Nominee Criteria

  • Be certified in EM for a minimum of five years before the initial term begins
  • Be a graduate of an ACGME-accredited fellowship in Sports Medicine
  • Be certified in Sports Medicine
  • Be actively involved in the clinical practice of Sports Medicine
  • Participate fully in continuing certification
  • If the physician has maintained EM certification, the following criteria must be met:
    • Be certified in EM
    • Be actively involved in the clinical practice of EM
    • Actively participate in the ABEM EM continuing certification process at the same level as required of all ABEM diplomates 

Sports Medicine Advisory Committee Member Roles and Responsibilities

Responsibilities

  • Provide input on the exam blueprint, the passing standard, and the direction of future Sports Medicine learning activities.
  • Attend the annual in-person meeting of the Advisory Committee and subsequent virtual meetings. The next in-person meeting is February 5-7, 2025.

Requirements and Terms of Service

  • Appointees must maintain certification in the appropriate subspecialty through the term of service
  • Appointees must be able to serve four-year term, renewable once
  • Appointees will receive reimbursement for travel expenses as well as honoraria for each meeting day
  • Appointees must comply with the ABFM Guidelines for Professionalism, Licensure, and Personal Conduct.

Time Commitment

Overall time commitment inclusive of meetings and travel: an annual three-day meeting in February with 2-3 additional virtual meetings throughout the year (approximately two hours each).

Nominees will be asked to update their demographic information in the ABEM portal. The demographic information from the ABEM portal will be provided to the Examination Committee members as part of the review process.
