    Solicitation of Readings for Future LLSA Tests
    A cornerstone of the Emergency Medical Services Maintenance of Certification program is the concept of Lifelong Learning and Self Assessment (LLSA).  The primary goal of LLSA is to promote continuous learning by diplomates.  The Emergency Medical Services Examination Task Force facilitates this learning by identifying a biennial set of LLSA readings to guide diplomates in self-study of recent Emergency Medical Services literature.
    The Emergency Medical Services Exaxmination Task Force wishes to identify important readings from well-respected journals and other publications that are widely and easily accessible to all Emergency Medical Services diplomates.  It is important to note, however, that the LLSA readings are designed as study tools and should be read critically.  They are not intended to be all-inclusive and are not meant to define the standard of care.
    Developing high-quality LLSA tests depends on identifying high-quality readings.  You can have a voice in the identification of these readings.  ABEM welcomes and requests that Emergency Medical Services organizations and diplomates submit suggestions for readings.
    Submission Criteria for Emergency Medical Services LLSA Readings

    The Emergency Medical Services Examination Task Force will review all readings that are submitted.  The Task Force has established the following criteria for LLSA readings:
    • Focus on recent advances or current issues in the field of Emergency Medical Services;
    • Be drawn from peer-reviewed Emergency Medical Services journals, other peer-reviewed journals, or updated practice guidelines;
    • Preferably be published within the previous five years of the test date, in printed or electronic form; and
    • Relate directly to one or more of the content areas within The Core Content of EMS Medicine.

    How to Submit Recommendations for LLSA Readings
    ABEM is responsible for the administration of the Emergency Medical Services Subspecialty programs, and will therefore implement all aspects of the LLSA process.  For each reference submitted, ABEM must receive the following two items:  

    1. Emergency Medical Services LLSA Reading Submission Form

    Complete an Emergency Medical Services LLSA Reading Submission Form (PDF version or Word version) for each reference that you recommend to the Emergency Medical Services Examination Task Force.  Be sure to provide all requested information for each reference, including the article/chapter title completely written out, the journal name, etc.  Do not use abbreviations or alter the form in any way, except to add the requested information in the space provided.  The Emergency Medical Services LLSA Reading Submission Form is available from ABEM and may also be downloaded as an MS Word document from the ABEM website.  The form can be computer-printed or typewritten.

    2.  One Paper Copy of the Article, Chapter, or Other Text

    One paper copy of the article, chapter or other text for which you have submitted a reference must be mailed or faxed to ABEM to be considered for inclusion.  Electronic copies of readings cannot be accepted due to copyright restrictions.

    References received by July 1, 2014, will be considered for inclusion in the 2016 LLSA test.  References submitted after that date may be considered for future years.
