Residency Training
Applicants must successfully complete an Emergency Medicine residency training program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). All years of training for which the residency program is accredited must be completed. Refer to the Policy on EM Residency Training Requirements for more details.
Physicians who began Emergency Medicine training prior to July 1, 1987, should contact ABEM for eligibility requirements.
ABEM also recognizes specific types of combined training programs that have been approved in advance by the respective sponsoring boards.
Medical Licensure
Physicians must fulfill the requirements of the Policy on Medical Licensure.
Certification Delays
Board eligible physicians who delay any portion of the certification process have additional certification requirements under the Policy on Board Eligibility.
