Physicians must attest to the completion of one Patient Care Practice Improvement (PI) Activity on their ABEM Portal during each 5-year certification cycle.

The Improvement in Medical Practice (IMP) requirement focuses on practice-based learning and improvement in areas like patient care, communication, and more. Activities typically must include the physician's own patients.

IMP activities must follow these steps:

  • Measure ten or more patients with a specific condition or clinical situation
  • Compare to standard
  • Implement an improvement
  • Re-measure


Requirements for Clinically Inactive Physicians

Clinically inactive physicians see fewer than 20 patients in a five-year span. In such case, the IMP requirement would be waived. If you wish to declare yourself clinically inactive, please contact the ABEM office.
