Improvement in Medical Practice 

The Improvement in Medical Practice (IMP) requirement focuses on practice-based learning and improvement in areas like patient care, communication, and more. Activities typically must include the physician's own patients IMP activities must follow these steps:

  • Measure ten or more patients with a specific condition or clinical situation
  • Compare to standard
  • Implement an improvement
  • Re-measure
Physicians then attest to completion of the activity on the ABEM website.

To fulfill the IMP requirement, clinically active ABEM-certified physicians must complete and attest to two Patient Care Practice Improvement (PI) Activities, one in the first five years of certification, and the other in the second five years.

Communication / Professionalism Pilot: From June, 2016 – December, 2018, the CP requirement will not be part of the ABEM MOC Program. This pilot is reflected on physician's ABEM MOC Personal Page.
