Emergency Medicine physicians certified in Pain Medicine must participate in an ABEM-accepted continuing certification process and pass the Pain Medicine MOC Examination every ten years. ABEM believes that physicians who continue to practice Emergency Medicine in addition to their subspecialty should continue to maintain their EM certification.
Pain Medicine-certified physicians perform tasks related to ABEM's continuing certification program through their ABEM Personal Page.
Pain Medicine-certified physicians must meet one or more ABEM continuing certification requirements before reaching their five-year deadline. To regain status, they must make up missed requirements before the end of their ten-year certification period.
The Pain Medicine Recertification Examination is offered every year.
The Pain Medicine Recertification Examination is open to Pain Medicine-certified physicians in years six through ten of their certification cycle.
To register for the exam, ABEM Pain Medicine-certified physicians complete the current year’s registration form, which is available from the ABEM office. The following must be submitted for a registration to be complete:
The registration fee is an administrative fee the covers the cost of reviewing and authorizing the registration form and submitting authorization to the board that administers the exam. This fee cannot be refunded.
By signing the registration form, physicians give ABEM permission to verify information submitted.
ABEM mails a receipt when the registration and examination fees have been received and a notification when the exam authorization has been sent to the administering board.
Physicians with approved applications will receive information about how to register for the exam.
The Pain Medicine Recertification Examination is an approximately four-hour, computer-based, single-best-answer, multiple choice exam consisting of approximately 200 questions.

ABEM sends candidates the results of their examination in writing. Results are also posted online.
