Maintaining Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Certification
Emergency Medicine physicians certified in Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine (UHM) must participate in an ABEM-accepted continuing certification process. ABEM believes that physicians who continue to practice Emergency Medicine in addition to their subspecialty should continue to maintain their EM certification.
Changes to UHM Continuing Certification Process
Starting in 2025, the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) intends to launch a new longitudinal assessment program (LAP) for physicians to complete in order to maintain a UHM certification. Along with the launch of LAP, physicians who renew UHM certification in 2025 or later will transition to a five-year certification cycle and requirements. This is similar to the Emergency Medicine transition to five-year certification cycles.
ABEM will extend UHM certification expiration dates as needed to allow physicians time to participate in LAP and receive a final pass/fail determination.
